立ながら文書て置く見せの端                                    猿雖

 

店先で、立ったままで手紙を書き残しておく。
銭持って手にて祖母の泣るる                                    芭蕉

 

その手紙とともに置かれた銭を手にもったまま、老婆が泣いておられる。「立ちながら」に書いているひと慌ただし様子が 示されている。。。その人と別れる老婆の姿を 向かい合わせた。

Ensui gives us very little to work with; we cannot say who is the subject or what is in the note. Basho adds only a little bit more, but enough to fulfill the image; from our knowledge of male and female behavior in a patrilocal society, we can figure out the situation. Basho transforms Ensui’s vague image into anthropology, a study of human family life. Apparently a man is deserting his family. He does not sit down with them to explain or say good-bye; he does not even come into the house. Hastily he writes a note and leaves it with a few coins inside near the door. We feel his shame and his weakness, there in Ensui’s words.

Basho focuses on a woman, in particular her body parts and actions. The grandmother holds the coins in her hand, and cries for her son who is abandoning his responsibility, for her daughter-in-law and grandchildren who now have no one to support them. So smoothly the mind moves from Ensui’s stanza into Basho’s.

 

According to his follower Kyoriku, Basho often said,

 

Many of my followers write haiku equal to mine,
however in renku is the bone marrow of this old man.

 

The “bone marrow,” or inner core of Basho’s genius is, as he demonstrates with COINS HELD IN HER HAND, his ability to see the potential for profound human experience in another poet’s stanza, then realize that potential with what Michigan State University professor Michele Root-Bernstein calls,

“the compassionate intuition in Basho’s links.”

祖母の泣るる 

 

猿雖がほんの少しの情報をしか説明していない。句の主語はだれ,「文書」はなにを指しているのか、われわれ読者には分からないのです。芭蕉もう少しを加えることによって、この場面を完成させた。父系社会における男性と女性の行動に関する知識から、この句の状況を推測できる。芭蕉が猿雖の漠然としたイメージを人間的な、人の家族生活についての検討する人類学へと転じた。 この夫はあきらかに家族を見捨てようとしている。家族と座って話し合うことも告別することもせず、部屋に入ることさえしない。急ぎながらメッセージを書いて、わずかな小銭をドアの内側で 残しただけであった。彼の恥と弱さが、猿雖の言葉でわれわれ読者に感じられる。

 

芭蕉は女性の体の部分と活動に焦点をあわせる。彼の母は小銭を手に握り、 責任から逃げた息子のために、支えを失った嫁と孫のために、泣いている。 情が猿雖の前句から芭蕉へと移るこんなにスムーズにのです。

 

芭蕉がと言った:

俳句は門人の中、予におとらぬ句する人多し。
俳諧においては老翁が骨髓(こつずい)と申されける。

 

骨髄あるいは芭蕉の天才の真髄は、この付け句に見せてくれる、 ほかの作者の前句からこのような奥深い人間味の可能性を見出すことであり、可能性と実現させている。Michigan State University の博士、ミシェル・ルート・バーンスタンは 「芭蕉の付句にある憐れむ直感」と述べます。
